The Athletic Body System (ABS) evolved from years of training as athletes ourselves. We made simple observations; our own physiques and the physiques of those around us were coming from somewhere? We weren’t spending half our life performing useless exercises or endless amounts of typical cardio and yet we all had reasonably good physiques. Meet Bryan Kavanagh, BSc, CSCS... I have been training as a combat athlete for years now and this is where my passion for training, nutrition and physique development began.

GUYS! Please STOP Making These BIG Mistakes!  

Working in the health and fitness industry as personal trainers and through simple observations we notice all the big mistakes guys constantly make. Let us briefly take a closer look at a few of these mistakes made by men from all over the world!

MISTAKE 1: Training Like A Professional Bodybuilder!

You are NOT a bodybuilder! Remember there's a big difference between building a better body and body building. Bodybuilders have a distinct method of training that suits their genetics and their superior muscle building potential. When the majority of people use a bodybuilding program one of two things happens...

              1. They get NO RESULTS and completely waste their time

              2. They actually back pedal and get smaller and fatter!

'But Why?'

These gifted individuals have the ability to train with a lot of volume and very little frequency and they can recover from it! i.e. they do dozens of straight sets and eat like a HORSE! (And let's not forget to mention the extra chemical aids a lot of these individuals will use!) Now to the average lifter this means doing too much volume and breaking down more muscle than is possible for you to gain back when you are recovering, and then get fat from the amount of calories you consume in the hope that you will gain muscle.

MISTAKE 2: Using Workouts From The BIG Name "Muscle Magazines"!

The workouts you see in the ‘muscle mags’ are complete nonsense! They are fabricated by a writer who possibly has NO training experience. Do you honestly think the interview that goes along with the guy in the silly pants and nipple revealing low cut t-shirt is actually him? Afraid not, it is a magazine editor/writer copying workouts from past issues. Come on you know all the workouts are the same!

MISTAKE 3: Taking Advice From Your Local Gym Muscle Building Guru!

Ah yes, the local HERCULES. He knows it all! Make sure you train twice a day and do forearms on a Monday morning and triceps on their own on a Thursday evening because your hormone profile is better then... COME ON! He is juiced and talking garbage. The guy he learned it from probably knows a bit but the information you are receiving is 2nd or 3rd hand information that has been passed down from meathead to meathead. DON'T LISTEN!

MISTAKE 4: Only Lifting Weights and Working The Beach Muscles!

Monday =  Biceps, Tuesday = Chest, Wednesday = Biceps, Thursday = Chest  . . etc.

Does that sound familiar? Yea its YOU training your mirror muscles! The ones you see from the front! Well there are two reasons why this is just plain stupid!

1.    Your body will not let one bodypart develop too much if its opposing muscle isn’t developed at least nearly as much. i.e. as a safety mechanism your body will STALL chest development if you have a weak back. It makes sense . . you can exert more force pushing than pulling. Your body detects this and realises its at risk of injury so it inhibits growth.

2.     Even if it were possible to just train these muscles you would LOOK ridiculous. You need to train the entire body for a leaner, more muscular look!

MISTAKE 5: Training With Either Really Low Reps or Really High Reps!

Training with low reps and high reps have their place but not in the following circumstances.

1.   You are a nuisance and lift far heavier than you are able to! i.e. you cant even do one rep of the weight you are lifting and need a spotter CONSTANTLY. Lighting it up HE-MAN. You cant lift it!

2.   You DO reps to failure with a silly little weight until you ‘feel a burn’ and you are under the illusion that this is hard training! Sorry! Join the aerobics class you will build more muscle there!

MISTAKE 6: Training Without A Properly Structured Training Plan!

Saying you will train chest and triceps today does not constitute a plan!!! You NEED to have a weekly plan and monthly plan and even a quarterly plan, depending on your training level and seriousness about training. Now I do NOT mean writing down every rep and every set you do IN ADVANCE between now and Easter. But I am saying you must address your GOALS! Are you fat and still trying to build muscle when you could probably do with de-greasing and burning some bodyfat for a while and stop eating that full chicken and guzzling 8 protein shakes every day? Just a thought.

MISTAKE 7: Assuming Your Making Gains Because Your Bodyweight Is...

INCREASING...  That’s most likely all that's increasing, is your bodyweight! ‘I just want to be 200 pounds’ is a popular one in the gym . . sounds great. . but looks HORRIBLE in most instances! 3 cheers for the new guy in the 200 pound club who ate BIG MAC’s and ice cream and trained his chest 9 times every week for the last 2 years. He looks DISGUSTING! Yea that’s right. Being too caught up with that number is the main reason most trainee’s look ridiculous with their top off! They look ‘OK’ with a baggy sleeveless tank top but put them in a tight wife beater and you can see the MOOBS (MAN BOOBS) and that donut shaped belly button!

MISTAKE 8: Overdoing The DAMN Protein Shakes!

Having a shake in the morning then one at lunch with your fried chicken and then another after training and another after bed. . . ? You are going to get FAT. Now I’m not saying protein shakes make you fat but I am saying the accompanying 2000+kcals from the meals you had as well WILL! Have a protein rich meal and a post workout shake please! Your wasting money and storing fat!

MISTAKE 9: WASTING Your Money On Expensive-Useless Supplements!

‘Check this out lads I got the new ‘VASO JUDO PUMP 9000’ it makes you JACKED and PUMPED and DOUBLES STRENGTH, STRIPS FAT and makes you HOOOGE all at once and it also helps you LEVITATE and grow more FACIAL HAIR so you look UBER manly’ if you believe that sort of crap you deserve to be out of shape. STOP wasting your hard earned money please!

MISTAKE 10: Assuming That Women Actually Like The RIDICULOUSLY...

HUGE Look! Who really wants to be ridiculously HUGE? If you do, leave this website NOW. If you want to be lean and athletic and actually make physical improvements stay and read on. We aren’t plastic surgeons now so if you fell out of the ugly tree you're stuck with that but we can however help you compensate. Ha, only joking. I’m sure your not that bad. STOP Making It Harder To Get Lean and Gain Muscle and START Making Your Body Lean and Muscular!


Do you know what Olympic sprinters do to develop their incredibly lean and muscular physiques??? And we assume that you would much prefer to look like an Olympic sprinter or any speed and power athlete than you would a big bulky bodybuilder! Do you honestly think sprinters have a bulking and cutting phase like bodybuilders??? Do you think they have  chest and triceps day??? NO, of course they don't! These athletes must train in a manner that is specific to the demands of their sport. They need to be fast, dynamic and have great work capacity, so they therefore must train in a fast and dynamic way! Basically they will "train fast, to be fast." Makes perfect sense right??? Of course it does. They don't get fast by training slow. 

Now compare that with what most people who seek a lean and muscular physique. What do they usually do? They make it harder for themselves to get lean and muscular!

They start training like a bodybuilder or an endurance athlete, or both. They train at slow speeds hoping for fast results! This does not make any sense whatsoever. You see people have confused endurance training and fat loss. They are not the same thing. Training for endurance is great if you are or want to be an endurance athlete. However, you will actually make it harder to get lean and muscular if you start training like an endurance athlete. If you want to get LEAN FAST, then you need to TRAIN FAST!

Sprinters have killer physiques. Their physiques are well-rounded. Their upper body, legs and their abs are better than 95% of regular gym goers! Yet they do not train like bodybuilders to develop their lean and muscular physiques. YES they LIFT, but they do not do bodypart routines like a chest and triceps day or a back and biceps they, and like we said they do not go through a bulking or cutting phase.

They lift and when they do, they lift big, they lift heavy and they lift fast! You will NEVER see a sprinter doing silly wrist curls, tricep kickbacks or any other useless exercise! Along with their weight lifting they will perform bodyweight exercises, circuit training, sprints, interval training and work to increase their work capacity! Their training is diverse, but the KEY to everything they do is quality and intensity!

By training in this manner, Olympic sprinters and speed-power based athletes are able to develop and maintain their lean and muscular athletic physiques all year round, train in a manner that is appropriate for the demands of their sport, which is ultimately going to improve their sporting performing. 

Take a leaf out of an athletes book, not a bodybuilding book or magazine, and start training athletically if you truly want to develop a lean and muscular athletic physique!

As a competitive athlete and fitness/figure model, I know the importance of finding balance in life whilst maintaining a healthy and fit body and mind. Cleaning up the cardio confusion! There seems to be mass confusion about cardio training, even amongst trainers themselves. The biggest problem seems to be peoples understanding of what cardio training is. Keeping it plain and simple, you should understand that cardio training is anything (which means everything) that causes an elevation in heart rate and respiration. 

NEWS FLASH!!! There's no such thing as the anti-cardio squad. Nowadays we've heard some trainers referring to other trainers as the anti-cardio squad or anti-cardio brigade, but there really is no such thing.

Cardio machine manufacturers are also big culprits in creating this cardio confusion. There's an enormous amount of money to be made from the sale of your typical cardiovascular machines. Just look at the costs of treadmills, rowers, bikes, etc these days. 

The manufacturers need to create a pitch in order to get you to buy, and they know very well that fat loss is peoples number one objective, so they try to hook you into believing that you need to buy an expensive piece of cardio equipment in order to achieve your fat loss goals. Usually paying big money to some fitness model or athlete to appear in their commercials, to further hook you into believing that the number one way to burn fat and get seriously lean is to get your ass onto one of their high priced pieces of equipment.

Although you can perform some effective workouts on your typical pieces of cardio equipment, they are by no means necessary. There are many other less expensive, more practical, time efficient and effective methods that will help you get the most out of your workouts and ultimately bring you closer to the physique you desire.

Former Fat Boxer STOPS His Cardio Obsession, STARTS Using ABS and FINALLY DROPS The Pounds of Fat and Becomes All-Ireland Champ

‘I was training hard I’d do well right? Not really… I had been so fatigued and practically starving myself for over a week coupled with extended periods of running up to 15 miles a night and performing 18 rounds of conditioning work in the run up to the weigh in. I made the weight but I was so fatigued and had eaten so little that I couldn’t eat afterwards and lost the fight, retiring in the third round of the semi final. I knew I was better than this I knew something had to change but I didn’t know what… so what did I do? Trained more! For the next 6-8 months I trained harder and still no change. Before I was introduced me to the ABS system I would go to the gym and spend 2 hours just going through the motions – doing the usual ‘gym instructor’ prescribed programmes, you know the usual - Cardio  followed by 3x10s of machine weights,  machine weights, some benching and maybe chins, and the infamous ab crunches etc etc . To be honest I never noticed any changes physically. I’m sure I made some progress over the 4 years but nothing serious.  I’ve always had a fast metabolism and I was always aware of this, so I never felt particularly motivated to train - When I stopped for 2 months+ my physique would look basically the same as when I trained for 2 months, and my weight never changed!  Anyway I still went to the gym on and off (meaning regularly for 3 months and then giving up for 3 months after not seeing results). In one of my recent 3 month stints I realised must be doing something wrong (took me long enough), so I strayed from my typical programme and started experimenting with some ridiculous benching programmes, supersets,  squats etc. Basically I was following a body builder programme as so many male gym users do. I’d still do my 2hour sessions (!) and my muscles would be destroyed afterwards, I could only manage 2 days on per week! After following this fairly intense program for 3 months I did make modest gains in size and strength, but I never really addressed my diet and my sessions were pretty long and boring so I knew I wouldn’t stick it for much longer...plus I’d prob end up burning out! That’s when Bryan introduced me to the ABS method of training, and what a difference it made! I finally saw some real progress after just 4 weeks! That’s pretty good motivation to train after 4 years of getting basically nowhere. The exercises in the manual are genius! They progress nicely to each other and they are broken down for each individual’s level of training - its fun too believe it or not -I now happily do 3 or 4 40-50 minute sessions a week!  The ABS manual is full of useful information which arms you with tonnes of training knowledge, which in itself is motivating (for me anyway). I asked for Bryans help as I had to lose weight in order to get knee surgery. I lost the required weight and more! Now I didn’t do the training because of bad knee ligament damage but I walked, performed some short exercise routines to strengthen my knee and followed the ABS food pyramid and it really works.
